POWERWELL - ORIGINAL IP DEVELOPMENT
PowerWell is a personal IP project I devote time on with my husband and brothers-in-laws. We've shown PowerWell and PowerWell: Fates in the con space, such as PAX East and West, and aim to release is by end of this year!
Power Well: Fates is a 1v1 or 2v2 hero fighter that utilizes the match 3 activation resource in a travel-friendly, card format!
There are 8 heros, with 9 abilities each, with completely different mechanics.
Art-direction wise, I wanted Fates to feel like a marriage between stylized games like Overwatch and Western animated series. The gameplay surrounds the use of matching colors, which became a huge part of the design as well. Thus, the hero designs are focused on strong shapes, saturated colors, and varying spins on fantasy classes.
Because I'm currently the only artist on the team, I allowed my concept process to be a lot looser. This meant less focus on polishing out a final concept piece to save more time for card illustrations. We had a very short deadline on this project. Most of this was done in 3 months, and we wanted each card to be unique. Balancing self-scoping here was a must!
Power Well: Fates

Wanted to make a wizard cowboy, that is both a little polished yet a little rugged.

Bard commands the Winds of Change to flow through the chimes on her spear; playing beautiful Songs in combination with decisive strikes.

When we meet Aru, his master (who has saved him) is trapped within the blade. Aru's mission is to follow his master's Guidance, and wish for his master to live again.

Knight has 2 tokens, 1 side is sword, 1 side is shield. They can either have a sword and shield out, or 2 sword/2 shield. Because of this, I wanted to illustrate how the sword and shield can get bigger with slotted pieces,

Puppet master was inspired by the large parade floats that are made. I was particularly stricken by the Parade of Giants, and fell in love with the idea that this crazy dancer made her parade-golem sentient. I played with themes surrounding "The Fates", hence the spinning wheel, spider, and yarn theming.

Beasthunter has a dual trap and crossbow that are on one chain. The trap lays around her head, and the cross bow at her side. She fights by whipping her crossbow on a chain to lash out for further targets. I went with a tension-based activation approach for this design challenge.
